Norman Thomson has led a career covering logistics, operations, and finance. During his extensive career at Woolworths, Norman introduced world class supply chain systems leading to a sustainable competitive advantage for decades and led the brand’s growth in to Africa and the Middle East. Norman also introduced best practice ERP systems that greatly simplified the organisation while improving internal controls and delivering highly efficient and operationally integrated management information at all levels in the organisation. As Woolworth’s Financial Director, he delivered significant shareholder value by increasing group ROE from 11% to 35%; this value was driven by operational leverage and balance sheet efficiency. Norman served on the board for Woolworths and its Australian subsidiary, Country Road.
Guy Mandy has worked for large investment banks and asset managers in the United Kingdom. Most recently, Guy was an Executive Director at Nomura in Fixed Income Strategy where he was responsible for assessing markets and the macro environment. Using his macro framework he published fundamental views and developed trading ideas for hedge funds, asset managers and central banks. He also produced bespoke research and scenario analysis around critical events and has been involved in building market analytics systems. Prior to his markets roles, Guy worked in corporate strategy analysing and valuing acquisition targets across the financial sector as well general strategy work within broker-dealers. His primary focus at Aspect Advisory is on markets, asset management and the wealth sector.
Stuart has had extensive experience working with blue-chip corporates within the finance sector over the past 9 years. He has worked with all four of the big banks in SA, as well as the major DFIs, long and short-term insurance houses, asset managers and HNW service providers. Stuart specialises in themes affecting corporate finance, specifically supporting group and business strategy through organic and inorganic growth planning, and post-merger integration and optimisation. His projects have also had deep focus on the development of agile, robust and comprehensive enterprise risk management frameworks, including developing proactive regulatory amenability for large entities.
Dr. Christian Schmaltz has worked with the Finance and Risk divisions in banks across Europe and in South Africa. His broad experience ranges from instrument pricing, limit setting systems for market risk, instrument cash flow analysis, and liquidity stress testing to dynamic capital allocation concepts. Christian is a Professor of finance at the Aarhus University in Denmark and a visiting researcher at Deutsche Bundesbank. He frequently lectures at the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management for Bank Controlling and Liquidity Risk Management, and provides training on all aspects of banking regulation covering all risk types. Christian’s research is centred around practical challenges in implementing regulation reflected in publications on Basel III - compliance, liquidity risk management and risk reporting. Apart from participating in research conferences, Christian is also a frequent speaker at practitioner conferences.
